Birthday Love
Wednesday, June 10, 2009
I do own this series in the original floppy format, but as much as I've been itching to re-read it, I know I'm not going to dig it out to do so. I love the trade paperback format. It's a format I will pull off of the bookshelf and read over and over again.
I'm currently reading and loving Ed Brubaker's Captain America. He's also written (or still writing?) Daredevil, so because I freaking love what he's doing with Cap, I want to do this book, too. But I feel I should find a good jumping on point and the beginning of the current series is a good place. Kevin Smith did the first arc, Bendis followed him I believe and then Brubaker. I'm willing to give it a try.

A book I've been wanting to read for a long time. I've just never managed to pick it up.

As I said before, I've been loving what Ed Brubaker is doing with this book. I've never been a huge Captain America fan, but if the book was always like this, it would be my favorite series. Not this past weekend, but the weekend prior, I read the last five trades in this series. This is the most recent and I'll be all caught up for now. It's just that good.

This looks like pure joy between two covers.

I keep hearing so much good about this book that I had to pick it up. I'm anxious to see what it's all about.

See my comments on Kingdom Come above.
What else should I be reading?

TELLOS AND PERHAPANAUTS ARRIVE ON THE IPHONE
SMASHOUT LLC is proud to announce the upcoming adaptations of two
amazing all-ages adventure comics, TELLOS and PERHAPANAUTS, to the
iPhone and iPod Touch.
TELLOS is a world populated by mythical and fantastical creatures, by
a rag-tag team of unlikely heroes, thrown together to confront a
darkness that threatens to spread across the countryside like a
plague! Experience the wonders of a world of imagination as the
mysteries of Tellos unfold in each issue. The answers are not what you
think!
There are places in this world where the fabric of reality has worn
thin, where strange and terrible creatures have crossed over to lurk
in the shadows and the night. There is an organization dedicated to
finding these creatures and sending them back whence they came,
sealing the rift behind them, and maintaining the integrity of those
borders. The organization is called BEDLAM. Its agents are...The
PERHAPANAUTS!
TELLOS is being adapted for the iPhone and iPod Touch with the full
permission and participation of TELLOS series co-creator Todd Dezago
and the estate of its other co-creator, the late Mike Wieringo,
represented by his brother, Matt. PERHAPANAUTS is being adapted with
the permission and participation of co-creators Dezago and Craig
Rousseau.
The first two issues of each title will be available in the iTunes App
Store in July, with the rest to follow soon after. Issue #1 of each
will be free downloads, with the remaining issues at $0.99 each.
"I've been a fan of TELLOS since it launched at Image, and I'm excited
to bring this series to a wider audience," says Steve Horton of
SMASHOUT LLC. "I'm also a fan of PERHAPANAUTS and feel this title
deserves more readers. I couldn't be happier to be a part of this."
"I can tell you now, there was a time, back during the very beginnings
of TELLOS, that Mike and I dreamed that one day people would be able
to read it on their phones," says Todd Dezago, co-creator of TELLOS.
"And not just one issue, the entire TELLOS saga! Hope you all enjoy
it. By thy side!"
Dezago adds: "Being able to read PERHAPANAUTS on my iPhone is just so
cool to me! I love it! I think we're gonna do a story where Choopie is
reading it--from over your shoulder!! Look now--there he is!! No, your
other shoulder!! Ope--forget it. He's gone."
21.4 million iPhones and 13 million iPod Touches have been sold since
the launch of each product, giving TELLOS and PERHAPANAUTS access to a
massive userbase. Additionally, Apple is expected to announce a new
iPhone or iPhones at the Apple Worldwide Developer's Conference,
taking place June 8-12 in San Francisco.

Where the hell are the Queen Titans??

So... some of you may have noticed that we haven't recorded a podcast in QUITE some time. Not only that, but blog postings have been pretty sparse lately as well. Quite honestly, we should have realized that trying to coordinate six people spread out through the United States was going to be a feat that even the Justice League would have trouble with - everyone is just so gosh-darned busy!!

We've also let the domain name lapse, so you can no longer use "www.dialhforhomo.com" to get there. You can, however, still use "dialhforhomo.blogspot.com". Go ahead and update your bookmarks and links now. We'll wait.

Back? Cool. Now, we're not gonna say that we'll never record a podcast again, but it's probably safe to say that we'll post on the blog more than we'll podcast. So keep those blog readers updated, folks. You just never know when we'll show up there!!

Thanks,
The Queen Titans

Comic Con!!
Yes! This weekend is the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, Washington, but that's not the con I'm referring to. Today was also the first Albany Comic Con of the year. This was the third since they started doing them here again, but the first that I was aware of. My good friend Sean mentioned it to me and so we decided to make an afternoon of it. Albany is a very small market and I wasn't expecting too much. The last time I went to a show in Albany was maybe 15 years ago and it was a small room with a couple of dealers and one or two guests. While the show itself was pretty small in scope, it was bigger than I expected. There were quite a few dealers and more than a few pros. Joe Sinnott, Ron Marz, Fred Hembeck, Joe Staton, Herb Trimpe, Ramona Fradon, to name a few. I believe John Cassady was there, too, or at least someone who looked just like him, but he was sitting and drawing (and texting) at one of the dealer's tables.
Then it was time to go shopping. It was kind of hard to shop considering the crowd. You had to fight your way in for a spot at the various dealers tables. Being the passive person I am, if I found an in, I would take it, but otherwise I would walk around and people watch. I eventually made my way through everyone's tables, it just took a while. I brought my list of things I was looking for since I never finished uploading it to my iPhone. It was funny to see how many people had their phones out, cross referencing their want lists with the boxes of books.
I didn't spend too much money, but I got more than I counted on. My awesome find of the day was the Golden Age Atom action figure set. Not only did I find it, but I found it for $4. There's nothing I like more than a bargain. I also picked up the first two volumes of The Essential Official Handbook Of The Marvel Universe Master Edition, Tarzan #208 (still working on my list of every DC Comic from 1972) and World's Finest #250 (a book I used to own and have been anxious to replace for a number of years).
I was hoping to find more toys, t-shirts and trade paperbacks, but was pretty happy with the overall selection.

The Eleventh Doctor

Time is on side of new Doctor Who
Maurice Chittenden
DOCTOR WHO is to regenerate into the youngest Time Lord. The BBC last night named Matt Smith, 26, as the actor who will replace David Tennant.
It is a tall order to step into the shoes of Tennant, 37, the Scottish-born actor who has proved the most popular Time Lord with fans of the series, which is now in its 46th year.
But Northampton-born Smith won his acting spurs opposite Billie Piper, also 26, one of the doctor’s most popular assistants, in the BBC adaptations of Philip Pullman’s The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. He played the assistant to Piper’s role as detective heroine Sally Lockhart.
Smith, who originally wanted to be a footballer and was a schoolboy player at Leicester City before a back injury forced him out of the game, will be the 11th television doctor when he takes over the role in 2010. He claims to have been a fan since the age of one.
The actor played Lockwood in Alan Bennett’s play The History Boys at the National theatre in London. Russell Tovey, 27, who played Rudge in the same play, was also considered for the role and was the choice of Russell T Davies, the scriptwriter who revived the programme for a new audience.
Smith, who also took the lead role of Danny in the BBC2 series Party Animals set in the world of young politicians, said last night: “I am flabbergasted. I have not slept to be honest – I have bags under my eyes. It is an iconic part of my culture which I’ve watched since 1983.” He added: “I’m just so excited about the journey in front of me.”
Smith’s selection has divided Doctor Who fans. Sebastian Brook, editor of drwhoonline.co.uk, which boasts the biggest internet community of 20,000 fans in the UK, said: “I think it is the right choice. It is good that they have got a young guy with lots of energy.”
But a message on gallifreyone.com, the most popular fan website, said: “This Matt Smith guy – I’ve never seen him in anything – may be a good actor but he’s way too young to play the Doctor. Maybe when he’s a bit older.”
Others said: “I actually hope he does fail miserably as it’ll teach the BBC that ‘yoof’ isn’t always best” and “At least they’ve stuck with the white male formula.”
There was speculation that the BBC might put the first black man into the Tardis or recast Piper as the first Time Lady. Paterson Joseph, 44, the black actor, was the bookmakers’ favourite to land the part.
Steven Moffat, the programme’s executive producer and new lead writer, said, “The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe.
“As soon as Matt walked through the door and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man. 2010 is a long time away but rest assured the 11th doctor is coming – and the universe has never been so safe.”
